Antigua and Barbuda are islands that form an independent state in the Lesser Antilles in the eastern Caribbean Sea, at the southern end of the Leeward Islands chain, with one dependency, the island of Redonda. The capital is St. John’s, in Antigua.Â
The nation is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary form of Government, and is a member of the United Nations, the British Commonwealth, CARICOM, and the Organisation of American States (OAS). Education in Antigua and Barbuda is mandatory and free of charge between 5 and 16 years. The health systems in Antigua and Barbuda are mainly financed and operated by Government.
His Excellency Prime Minister Gaston Browne seized a post with the Swiss American Banking Group after graduating from the University of Manchester with an MBA in Finance. He eventually rose to the position of Commercial Banking Manager.Â
He started his political career in 1999 when he was elected to parliament for the constituency of St. John’s City West. As an MP, he was appointed Minister of Industry, Trade, Planning, Commerce, and Public Service Affairs in his first term. In June 2014, Browne led the Antigua Labour Party to victory in the general elections, defeating his predecessor Baldwin Spencer and was sworn in as Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. He then secured his position again in 2018’s general elections.
